Good, upgradeable BD Player/ intro to BD
I must confess that it was a good Black Friday deal (this came with 15 total free BD's at Walmart), that tempted me into this purchase. I am not a gamer. I purchased this after I purcased my first A2 HD DVD player, because I wanted to have even more variety as a hi-def enthusiast. Updates take a while, but run seemlessly. As of 9/2008 it decodes all sound codecs with the new firmware, and playback has been flawless so far. I was, as was reported by many, disappointed by its upscaling capabilities of SD's, but I use my Toshiba A35 and Onkyo 805 HD DVD player for these, as they are both known to be more proficient in this area. The remote is Blue-Tooth, so I can't use it with my 880 Logitech Harmony, but I have a separate remote for the PS3, so it's fine. I've played probably 2 dozen movies out of 200 I own, and I've not experienced any problems. Although I care more about the actual movies, and special features that don't require BD Live, the PS3 does allow me to access those features if I want to see them, so that was a nice addition. Caution: It does run pretty hot!
If you don't mind a gaming machine amidst your other components (and that it may need to stand upright), this machine may be for you, given its upgradeability and value.

bargain of the year
Bargain, bargain.... This PS3 was a new, never used, not even a open box console. I can't be more satisfied with my purchase. I was about to buy one 40gb for 9.99 @ best buy until I saw this at Amazon!!!!! 3.64 with s&h included..... for a 80GB.... After Sony mark down the PS3... still my console was cheaper..... Thanks Amazon!

I love the PS3.
It plays all my PS2,DVDs and BR disc. My son and I have lots of fun.

I Wonder How I Lived Without It!
This system is incredible! Having been a gamer from way back (Pong, anyone?) I was hesitant to drop a big pile of money on any system. But once the the HD War was finally settled and Blu-Ray became the victor, I was convinced that it was time to take the plunge! And now, I am so glad that I did! This system has become the centerpiece of my entertainment system, and I have been using it far more than I had ever thought or dreamed! The 80G HDD has plenty of storage space, the on-line capabilty works great! (You can use either the built-in wi-fi or hardwired) The graphics are simply stunning, and the sound is incredible! The 4 USB ports ensure that I have plenty of room for my periphrals! Game play is nothing short of spectacular, as they have made excellent use of the full 1080p capability! I could swear that on most all of the games that it is like looking out of a window instead of looking at a tv! It is that spectacular! And let's not forget the Blu-Ray experience! I've seen hair follicles on some actors and stars that I'd never seen before! I've gone back and rewatched some of my old favorite shows, and been blown away at all of the details that I'd never seen before! It is that good!
So if you haven't gotten one of these babies yet, and are undecided, go ahead and take the plunge, because you won't regret it!

As DVD playback made the PlayStation 2 more than just a game machine, hefty multi-media features make the Sony PlayStation 3 an even more versatile home entertainment machine. Features such as video chat, Internet access, digital photo viewing, and digital audio and video will likely make it the central component of your media set-up. Still, it is first and foremost a game console--a powerful one at that. Now you can own this powerful console and start playing the most anticipated game of the year, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, right out of the box!
Under the Hood of the PS3
The PS3 features IBM's "Cell" processor and a co-developed Nvidia graphics processor that makes the system able to perform two trillion calculations per second. That's approximately 320 times more calculations per second than the PS2. Along with the traditional AV and composite connections, it also boasts an HDMI port, which delivers uncompressed, unconverted digital picture and sound to compatible high-definition TV and projectors. The system is capable of 128-bit pixel precision and 1080p resolution for a full HD experience.

Compatible PS3 80GB
I'm comparing this Playstation 3 80Gb Metal Gear Solid 4 Pack with the regular Playstation 3 80GB.
This pack comes with 1 dualshock 3 controller, 1 network cable, I ps3 80gb, MGS4, 1 USB, and 1 av cable, Card reader, and 4 USB slots. NOTE: neither both of these come with an HDMI (these are sold seperatly), and the PS3 80GB does not come an a network cable, and only comes with 2 usb slots and not card reader.
This pack was and still a limited release. I got mine sept. 29 2008 at my local wal-mart after buying an 80gb with no card reader. I only got it because i prefer the card reader to be built in and the 4 usb slots for extra controllers.
The big difference is that the MGS4 pack makes a little more noise with its fan than its PS3 80gb. They both give out 1080P HDTV with an HDMI Cable.
The setup is very easy. (Like any harddrive there is only about 78gb out fo the box) Games need to be loaded to the hard drive to work. Any save data can be saved in a usb drive and be easily used in another ps3.
Pros: This one is compatible for 70% of ps2 and 100% for ps1. (The 80gb alone is not), 4 usb slots, and a card reader (the 80gb only gas 2 and no card reader). Plays Blue-Ray, divx, and other types of formats. Can download games via the network cable (the 80gb does not come with a network cable).
Cons: Makes more noise than the regular 80gb. 0 dollars more than the regular. Limited release.

PS3 Love
This was a birthday gift for my fiance, and I can tell you that he absolutely loves it. Now as soon as we get Guitar Hero for PS3, I'll be able to enjoy it too! :)

Not much of a gamer, but it's a great game
I actually bought this so i could watch movies in Blue-ray, so the game was an extra, after putting the game in to try it out I was hooked the only thing is im not a gamer so im getting used to the controls but it's a lot of fun. The movies in Blue-ray look great on my High Def tv .

NOT HAPPY
So I purchased the ps3 and within 4 weeks I had boot up problems with it as it kept shutting down. I'm far from happy. I was sold a donkey and i'm pissed about it.

Very pleased with this product
My primary objective in purchasing the PS3 was for the blu-ray player. I have a projection system in my basement. Although my projector is not 1080p, I was able to see a significant difference in both image and sound quality when I played even normal DVD's via the PS3.

Excellent Entertainment Hardware
I've always been a Playstation fan but I've mostly been a PC gamer until recently. I choose the PS3 over the XBOX360 because of the Blu-ray player and I'm glad I did.
The system is so much more than just a gaming machine. It's an entertainment machine. I love the ability to set up my home PC as a media server and stream video and pictures through the PS3. I love the Playstation Network. Being able to download and play game demos is a real plus.
I also feel the PS3 is more forward looking. Within the next couple years as games become larger the XBOX360 will be held back by standard DVD capacity.

Why the PS3 w/Blu-ray should be you HD Home Theater Player!! (explained)
This review is only for the HDMI Blu-ray Player application for your HD 1080p Home Theater.
First of all the PS3 introduced Blu-ray quickly and cheaply to the masses. Probably helping Sony's Blu-ray win the HD player format wars.
Why is Blu-ray so awesome and a must have? Simply 25 - 50 g vs DVD's 5 - 10 g of info per disc. 1080p (w/HDMI cables (sold seperately) and HDTV) vs 480p. Finally, the cost of a Blu-ray player only is 9. The PS3 Comes with Blu-ray Player (play regular DVDs with upstreaming capabilty), 1080p playstation game console (you must buy the optional HDMI cable), plays CD's and accessible to the internet for just 9 wow.
My Qualifying Statement: My HD Home Theater weighs in at about 00, plus movies. The break down; a Mitsubishi Projector (HC-1500 up to 1080p with HDMI Blu-ray) 0 (orig 95), a Sony 5.1 Sound System (HT-SS2300) 3 HDMI inputs/1 HDMI output 9 (orig 9) and a Sony PLAYSTATION 3 (w/Blu-ray player included) 9 (orig 9). Sony High Speed HDMI cables 0 and HD Screen Paint & kit 0 for my 108" viewing wall screen. With this 1080p system I've created a HD HDMI 5.1 Home Theater presentation sight and sound equal to an IMAX (on a smaller scale) experience.
Simply I will explain only the Blu-ray HDMI Audio and Display Set-Up.
PS3 Main Menu Screen - pan (NOTE: PAN IS SAME AS ARROW)left to SETTINGS - pan down to DISPLAY STATUS depress enter button - VIDEO OUTPUT SETTINGS depress enter button - SELECT HDMI pan right - SELECT CUSTOM pan right - CHECK 480p / 720p /1080i /1080p depress X - SELECT FINISH depress X. Return to SETTINGS - pan down to SOUND SETTINGS depress enter button - - AUDIO OUTPUT SETTINGS depress enter button - Select HDMI pan right - SELECT MANUAL pan right - CHECK DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 CH1 / DTS 5.1 ch / PCM 5.1 ch44 and all other appropiate and defaults needed. to support.
Support PS3 accessories are; Sony High Speed HDMI Audio/Video Cables (suggested DLC-HD20T a 6' triple sheilded cable NOTE: length is determined by your Home Theater requirements. Mine was 3 x 6') and a PS3 Blu-ray Disc Remote Control (much more natural to use than the supplied game controller).
Bottomline: The PS3 HDMI w/Blu-ray player is the obvious economical and versatile choice for your HD Home Theater. Sony is the originator of Blu-ray so their product is proven to perform beautifully !!! And it does. Oh I forgot to mention it also supports BlueTooth technology. Meaning for one the remote works anywhere. Enjoy this masterpeice.

Game Play Good. Graphics & Blu-Ray Movies AWESOME!
I'm not a gamer, so I'm not going to critique this on it's gameplay. But, the graphics on an HD TV from the Blu-Ray movie player are UNBELIEVABLE! It sets the standard for home theater. Period.

I love PS3!
Great price for a console that completely pwns the 360. It supports true 1080p HD (even though my tv is only 1080i...) and the 360 doesn't... Blu-Ray, a cell processor... basically everything graphical that a 360 has... plus better physics, bigger worlds, more realistic AI, more dynamic gameplay, uncompressed textures, etc, etc...
Americans just don't seem to understand this concept. "They have the same graphics, so the PS3 must be a ripoff!" Absolutely wrong. If you know a thing or two about computers you'd know that the 360 was actually the ripoff. Red ring of death, overheating issues, DVD-only support (without add-ons), etc. "Well there are better games for the 360!" Sure, if all you want to play are first person shooters. Gears of War, Halo, Battlefront, BioShock, Call of Duty, FEAR, etc... all the most common games on 360 and are FPS's... with no other gameplay element (except in the case of BioShock, which is also available for the PS3 and runs at a higher frames per second).
For me, the choice is clear.

Excellent, nothing short of excellent. The future of gaming
Playstation 3 is the next step in entertainment. I love the option of blu ray hi-def and wireless connectivity. Playstation 3 has begun to prove itself as the best complete gaming system.
